Abstract:

This dataset contains masks for large marine ecosystems (LME), regional marine ecosystems (RME) and marine protected areas (MPA) to be used in the fisheries & marine ecosystems sector of ISIMIP3a and 3b (Frieler et al. 2023, Frieler et al. 2026).

While the LME masks originate from Sherman et al. (2017), the RME masks were provided by the modelling groups already participating in ISIMIP.

Annual maps and gridded layers of global MPA coverage from 1958 to 2025 (Roberts, K. E., et al., in prep.), constructed from the ProtectedSeas Navigator database (Zetterlind et al., 2025). Includes both comprehensive MPA coverage (all) and a strict protection subset, delivered as zipped shapefiles, NetCDF, and GeoTIFF formats at 1° and 0.25° spatial resolutions.

Version 1.1 adds the MPA masks.
