Abstract:

This dataset includes global, gridded projections of areas affected by strong tropical cyclone (TC) winds at 300 arc-second horizontal resolution, derived from CMIP6 climate model simulations, and prepared in the context of ISIMIP3b (Frieler et al. 2025). They describe the annual maximum TC wind speed in each grid cell, under pre-industrial, historical, and future climatic conditions according to different scenarios of greenhouse gas concentrations.

Synthetic TC track projections from the WindRiskTech TC model were bias-adjusted using observed TC data from IBTrACS, and sampled to obtain a probabilistic distribution of potential realizations of storms in each scenario. The data can be used for assessing the risks associated with TC wind hazard, such as risks to life, livelihoods, health, or economic assets. In the context of the EU Horizon project TipESM, they support the assessment of potential tipping dynamics in household recovery from climate-induced shocks and related poverty risks, as well as flood-induced human displacement risk (Schewe et al., 2025).
